HHF Mining Drill Pipe: 4330V MOD Steel Specifications for Heavy-Duty Drilling

Materials and their characteristics have to be matched exactly with the requirements of the drilling systems they are going to be applied in. Strength of the material is a significant parameter while choosing the steel, other properties such as the ability to elongate, resisting impact, and hardness are included in specifying the material as well.
Such characteristics become most important when the engineers are dealing with the designs of parts that are going to work under high mechanical loads.
Henan Zhongyuan Heavy Forging Co., Ltd. (HHF) is a company engaged in the production of drilling systems and also manufacturing large precision industrial forgings. Its list of specifications for mining drill pipes includes 4330V MOD steel with limits given for alloy composition and mechanical properties.
The steel contains 2.0 to 3.0% of nickel, 0.80 to 1.10% of chromium, and 0.40 to 0.65% of molybdenum. Vanadium is specified to be in the range of 0.05 to 0.15%. The percentage of carbon is 0.28-0.37. As regard to manganese, its concentration is within the range of 0.45% and 0.65%. The limiting percentage levels of phosphorus and sulphur, individually, are 0.015%.
Material composition of such a steel defines the material limits. For purchasing and technical people, the determination of material type and understanding the requirements very early is useful in avoiding confusion and difficulties during the review of drawings, technical specifications and various inspection documents.
HHF's published mechanical data state minimum tensile strength of 1,033 MPa and minimum yield strength of 964 MPa equally for the transverse (T) and longitudinal (L) directions. On the contrary other mechanical properties are given separately to each direction. Minimum elongation percentage is 10.7% in the transverse and 15% in the longitudinal direction. Corresponding minimum reduction of area is 32% and 45% while the impact energy is specified to be a minimum of 90 J (T) and 50 J (L) for these directions.
Hardness scale of 330–370 HW is also stated
It is essential to consider that properties in different directions can significantly affect performance. Despite that tensile and yield strengths are alike in both, other characteristics such as elongation, reduction of area and impact energy vary greatly between the directions. Therefore, the appropriate values according to your material direction should be used during the engineering review step, rather than assuming all mechanical properties of the material are identical.
Material data will not necessarily satisfy every product requirement for example with respect to a finished drill pipe. There are many aspects involved like product dimensions, connection details, machining tolerances, heat treating state as well as inspection acceptance criteria which should be finalized for the design. These specifications need to be aligned with the approved technical documents prior to production commencement.
HHF runs production units for forging, heat treatment, petroleum equipment, machining and electroslag remelting. It also operates a physical and chemical testing lab and technical research facilities. Its broader product portfolio includes drilling tools and other heavy precision components.
If buyers are evaluating mining drill pipe, the published 4330V MOD specs can serve as a technical reference for initial material check. Next, you should discuss with HHF the product configuration and inspection conditions needed so that the quotation and manufacturing process are aligned with the same requirements.
